It's not ICE Detention, it's "kid jail"

Doomerella Gets Schooled: Episode 17

Did you know that South Carolina Dems prevented the Republican gerrymander? How about the gutting of the VRA? Or that MANY Dems in congress have been fighting ICE? No? Actually these are pretty big stories, so you probably know some of them, but here are some of my favorites from this past week.

Hopefully they remind you that Dems are fighting back!

Transcript:

A: Holy shit, the South Carolina Dems did it!

D: Did what?

A: Stopped the gerrymandering.

D: For good????

A: No, but for now. The South Carolina Voting activists had infrastructure in place and were able to make the first day of early voting have such high turnout that enough Republicans decided it wasn’t possible to change the map anymore.

D: And?

A: it worked! Turnout was the highest ever for the first day of early voting in south carolina, over 55k ballots were cast by 5pm.

D: That’s a lot?

A: in South Carolina it is. And Jim Clyburn, who would have been gerrymandered out of his district helped encourage people to vote early. Here, check it out

D: Sounds like we know exactly what that result was.

A: yeah, we do now. The best way to support the south is to lift up incredible achievements like this one.

D: you think other states are gonna follow suit?

A: I certainly hope so. Louisiana voting activists are doing great things too, and Lauren Underwood did an incredible three minute video explaining all about the position they’re in.

D: We’re not watching the whole thing….

A: Watch a bit of it, and then you can watch the rest on your own.

D: Fine.

(stop at 0:51)

D: Jesus, that was powerful. I never thought to phrase it like that.

A: yeah. And using the best phrasing can make all the difference. But will you just watch a bit more?

D: I guess. I mean it is intriguing

(finish the clip)

D: Okay, okay I get the gist

A: promise me you’ll watch the rest later

D: It’s well done, I promise.

A: Good. But I hope you’re watching videos that aren’t as polished too.

D: Like what?

A: like Members of Congress going to ICE facilities. Wesley Bell went to the Ste Genevieve Detention center that is actually the county jail.

(stop at 0:45)

D: Wait, there are pregnant women in with the regular jail population?

A: disgusting, isn’t it? But wait, that’s not actually the part i wanted you to see. Keep watching

(Finish the clip

D: Oo I like that wording “stripped for parts.” I haven’t heard that one before.

A: yeah, it has a nice ring to it. And it really evokes the idea of building something better and just from the ground up.

D: Think it can be done?

A: Certainly not with this government in charge.

D: You’re just trying to get me to vote for Dems.

A: Always. No, but seriously, the best way we fight back and make sure it is possible to dismantle ICE in the near future is by telling these stories. Nanette Barragan was at Dilley, which she calls a “kid’s jail” and she focused on the humanity of a single child. Just watch

D: That’s disgusting.

A: yeah, it is, it’s more than disgusting, it’s deplorable. And Republicans want us to see these people as criminals and as statistics. The more our Dems tell their stories, the harder it is to treat them as one evil entity.

D: I hate this timeline.

A: you and me both.

D: So I guess maybe it’s possible….

A: yeah?

D: That Dems are doing important work and I should lift it up rather than screaming at them to do something

A: Oh really?

D: Shut up, don’t make me say it again.

A: I’ll take the win.

A: And that was this week’s Doomerella Gets Schooled. It’s important to remember that Congress is about creating and passing, or killing, legislation, but it’s also about messaging, and I think these are four fantastic messages that need to be spread further. As always, engage with this video in any way you can, as that’s the best way to spread it. And remember our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
