Ten Dollar Steak? Yummy Yummy?
Doomerella Gets Schooled 19
Democrats don’t have much power in Congress right now.
But most of the power they do have comes from the court of public opinion. So the stronger their messaging is, the more power they have.
People have been trained to dislike Democrats on sight, but luckily they are still able to make an impact even with that obstacle.
One of my favorite stories this week was from Congresswoman Janelle Bynum (OR-05). She went grocery shopping and showed exactly how much things cost and how ridiculous it is.
I’ve seen a lot of Reps do videos similar to this, but none look as relatable as Rep Bynum’s. It’s so clear that she’s not doing this for the video, she’s literally just shopping.
She understands why the tariffs hurt families because she has one of the families they hurt. Some members of congress are better off than the average American, but she’s not one of them, and this shows that beautifully.
I also really loved how Rep. Sara Jacobs put Rep Keith Self (TX-03) in his place regarding his stupendously idiotic idea for someone’s full time job to be checking people’s business cards and email signatures for pronouns in the State Department.
Let me repeat that. He wants the State Department, which is responsible for our diplomacy, to be focusing more on if someone had pronouns in their signature.
We are literally in a war with Iran and this is what Rep Self would rather they focus on.
As Rep Jacobs says “that is crazy.”
I think even Republicans would think this is a poor use of funds. I can’t imagine any voter hearing this discussion and thinking this is worth while.
Which is why Rep Jacobs posting this video matters. Remember, most of the Democrat’s power right now is in the court of public opinion, and this just makes Rep Self look very very foolish.
Not to mention, this is a hearing, so the more attention we give to this, the less likely this amendment will be included in the final Foreign Affairs Budget proposal.
And the same goes for Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur who also brought attention to a ridiculous Republican decision. Republicans are chomping at the bit to give someone a salary to look at email signatures, and yet, in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, they want to cut funding for the CDC’s Firearm Injury and Mortality Prevention Research Program, which costs a grand total of $12m.
That might sound like a lot to you, but in a government budget, that’s virtually nothing.
If it weren’t for the fact that I follow Rep Kaptur I would never know that Republicans were trying to cut such an important program. And that’s the thing, it’s not that Dems aren’t DOING SOMETHING, an it’s not that they aren’t posting about it, cause, she posted this on every platform.
Now maybe she could have made it more engaging, but would that have made a difference, I don’t know.
Republicans control these platforms. The algorithms are always going to be against Dem wins.
And if a Democrat fights back, but no one hears it, did it happen at all?
Here’s another one. Did you know that Joe Morelle created and heads the Anti Corruption and Democracy Reform Taskforce in the House?
Probably not.
I didn’t know till watching this video
Even though he put out a press release announcing it on April 15. And I have to believe part of that might be by design. I always say things are happening behind closed doors, and we will know about them when they are ready for public consumption, this feels like an example of that.
He’s ready to share what this task force is working on and that they are doing that work with the Brennan Center. And I will be on the lookout for more info on their work in the coming weeks and months.
So, those were four of our fighters last week.
And check out my video of these stories as well. A bit of a different formatting, especially great for anyone who loves old school YouTube banter.
I hope you enjoyed these stories!
If you read the whole post comment with 🥩 (a steak) cause it costs HOW much?
And if you watched the video comment with 📇 (a business card) cause what could possibly be less important for the state department to focus on?
Remember, our voices are our superpower, but only if we use them!
