Mail-in-voting is saved, for now, and other stories
We're NOT Doomed: Tue, July 7, 2026
I had an intro, and you probably saw it, but it had inaccurate information so it is now deleted.
Posting the right thing is more important than posting the fast thing and I should have looked more into why people were accusing Platner of not being vetted rather than assuming it was people not understanding a word.
What I meant to say is that voters hold responsibility for him becoming the nominee and even if the vetting job was bad, we knew some of the horrible things he did before yesterday.
Blaming “vetting” is a really easy way not to take accountability, even with the reality that they did a shit job.
Amanda Nelson explained it better.
Anyway, I promise the rest of this post is much more well researched.
Colorado
Tue, June 2 - Colorado passed a new law creating the “Colorado Artist Company Act.”
What does that entail?:
Artists must own not less than 51% of all voting securities of the artist company at all times (required ownership percentage).
Basically the law makes it easy for an artist to set up an LLC that ensures they keep control their own work.
A company can’t and a publisher can’t. Controlling shares must belong to the artist.
One thing you might not know about me is that I worked in the music industry before I was a content creator. And I can’t even tell you how rare this is. How easy it is for artists to lose their entire catalog, cause the record label owns it in full.
This law will be life changing for so many in every single artistic medium.
This idea was the brainchild of Yancey Strickler, founder of Kickstarter. And while, yes, he is the former CEO, it’s another reminder that when you care about something you have the power to go to your state legislature and make it happen.
Bill sponsor, Dem Rep Matthew Martinez said:
We can really set the tone for the nation on how we take care of our artists, our musicians, our painters, our poets. This just really makes sense, this is a red tape-cutting bill.”
And hopefully it will be coming to other states. While Colorado is the first state to make it law, California, Vermont and New Jersey will likely see it introduced soon.
I can’t wait to see how this changes the landscape and makes it more possible for more people to go into creative fields.
Salt Lake County, Utah
Mon, June 8 - Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County are suing DHS over the proposed ICE detention center in Salt Lake City.
Both the City and County Mayor emphasized that this was about infrastructure and values.
City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said:
This kind of facility has no place in Salt Lake City, not only due to its inhumane nature but also because of our limited water supply…Salt Lakers are legally entitled to public review and reasoned decision making on major actions by the federal government, and it is my responsibility as Mayor to defend these rights.
While County Mayor Jenny Wilson added:
The proposed facility is a dire threat to the very essence of our community values. It would overwhelm the infrastructure in the region, harm area businesses, and strain public safety and public health resources. The Federal Government did not notify nor consult with local officials, including myself.
DHS has not had a great track record with winning lawsuits regarding detention centers, so I imagine that won’t change here.
These are two incredible women politicians that do not get enough attention, and I hope this story changes that.
DC
Wed, July 1 - Clinton Appointee, Judge Emmet Sullivan has ruled against Trump’s ridiculous proposal that would prevent mail-in ballots from being sent to states that don’t turn over voter roll information.
This lawsuit was filed by the NAACP on June 3, the day after Trump issued his executive order, and by July 1 the proposal was dead.
The lawsuit argued that this was already found to be unconstitutional in their almost identical lawsuit from 2020. And Judge Sullivan agreed.
Anthony Ashton, Senior Associate General Counsel for the Legal Defense Fund celebrated the ruling saying:
Put simply, the use of mail-in voting helps reduce voter intimidation at the polls and election day dirty tricks. This decision makes clear that access to the ballot cannot be tied to arbitrary requirements. The NAACP will continue to hold this government accountable when it attempts to undermine fair and equal access to the electoral process.
Trump will keep trying to make it harder for Democrats to vote, but this was an important win.
So those are today’s stories. Remember, we have the power to affect change.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
