I appreciate what you're saying but if you read between the lines, the message is that progressives will never set policy on the national level because everyone cedes to conservatives. As a progressive since 1965 I am already frustrated with the direction of the US, but now I feel hopeless. If what you're implying is true, I give up.

If that were true, we wouldn’t have a democratic party with a red line about gay marriage and about guns and about abortion among other things

That's good to know! Do you think, given the extreme disparity in values between right and left, that the country will ever settle down into some kind of peace? When I was a kid, the parties held different views but not like this. At least most politicians believed in respecting the law and upholding the Constitution. Nixon notwithstanding, there were fewer dirty tricks. Yes, there was violence, especially around civil rights and the Vietnam War, but the average person wasn't obsessed with guns the way a lot of people are now. And the media was a lot more trustworthy.

I wish i could answer that. I hope so

You are young. I am not. I have seen many more speakers than you have and so I completely appreciate your pragmatism and belief in getting things done. I do not take signs to protests that say something about kings or fascism although I hardly concur. I carry a sign that says VOTE. Because really it is the bottom line. I had a young person come to my house to do a repair - he was lovely. As I was getting the bill, I spontaneously said, I have a flavor to ask. And he said - OK. And I said - please vote. And he was very repetitive.

Make contacts. Call your representatives. March. And please vote. And thank Ariella early and often. Thanks Ariella!

Nancy Pelosi said that she was an effective leader because she knew how to count.

The job really is not about pushing a particular issue so much as getting things passed or stopping the other side from getting bad legislation through.

This is a great article. It clarifies so much that people don’t think through. I think I’ve had a similar journey with AOC. The reason I’ve warmed up to her has nothing to do with policies; it’s her ability to play well with others. This is something often lacking in many members of the far left.
