We're NOT Doomed: Jan 9, 2026
Keep fighting, don't let up!
Every post is not meant for you.
Each Dem represents a massive variety of people. That means that while they are trying to reach you, as a political junkie, they are also trying to reach that mom who barely knows their name and couldn’t care less about Venezuela.
The mom who works a good union job, but it’s long hours and when she comes home she’s not watching the news, be it traditional or new media. She’s making dinner for her family and watching cute dog videos.
On the off chance that a video of her senator slipped through, she’s much more likely to stop scrolling on the video talking about the cost of living, even while something as horrific as Venezuela or the ICE murder or even the vote for the ACA premium tax credits are happening.
For those videos, for the cost of living posts, you are not the target audience. So it’s incredibly unhelpful when the comment section of those posts say things like “I already knew this, what are YOU going to do about it?” or “Don’t talk, DO SOMETHING!”
There’s this expectation on social media, “if I come across it, it must be for me.” or worst yet, “if a Democrat posts about it, I must be the target audience.”
Both of these are so weird. First off, that’s not how social media works. I mean, the algorithms are good, but not THAT good. And second, you are not the only constituent your elected official has, and if they’re not your elected, then you aren’t a constituent at all.
The goal is that they make all kinds of different posts with all kinds of different audiences in mind. And some of that is going to be repetitive, and some of that is going to include way less information than you were hoping, because, while the inside baseball is helpful for us, most people who aren’t us will just scroll.
You might think, “I fall into that category.” You don’t. If you are someone who comments on elected officials posts, these kinds of posts are not made for you. If you know who I am and have any opinion my content, then these posts aren’t made for you.
No matter how much you may think you must get something out of every post a Dem makes or else they’re not doing anything, that’s just not true.
It’s important for our electeds to talk about cost of living, and events they are doing in the district and how much money they returned to their constituents and that random block party they attended.
AND on top of that they should be talking about the bigger things, going into more detail, explaining how the process of a certain bill works. It’s not an either or, it’s a yes and.
Please remember this. It doesn’t help to get angry and blame Dems about something not meant for you.
And I hope the idea that maybe Dems aren’t just posting nonsense with the sole purpose of pissing you off, makes you feel less doomed.
But if not, here are some things that certainly will.
And scroll to the bottom for Doomerella’s reaction to all of this!
Louisiana
Thu, Jan 1 - Typically the most consequential SCOTUS decisions come out in June (which is just great for this June baby, though my birthday is on a Sunday this year, so at least for that). There was a concern that, in order to change the maps in Louisiana, they’d rule as early as possible so they could get rid of the second majority Black district in time for the midterms. .
That deadline has now passed. So, while there is a still a very good chance the Voting Rights Act will be gutted through this case this year, it won’t affect the Louisiana midterms, and probably won’t affect the midterms at all.
We already know how important November is, but let this be just another reminder. We can’t let this assumed SCOTUS decision be permanent, we need to have the tools in place to be able to codify the Voting Rights Act and make it even stronger. We have to be in the majority for that to be possible.
The fact that this decision won’t affect the midterms is so huge and definitely makes me feel less doomed.

Tue, Jan 6 - The Trump Store is closing. It’s easy to feel like everything is getting worse, but this is a sign that it’s not. It’s closing because, according to the owner:
Business has slowed down some because there’s not really much action going on with Trump. It’s time.
There’s not much going on with Trump? I mean he’s not holding rallies, but I wouldn’t say “there’s not really much action going on.”
I would say though that every day someone on social media says their neighbor took down their Trump flag. That his approval rating is in the toilet, and even many of his supporters aren’t happy with many of his actions.
This store has been around for six years, and now that he’s in office, and supposedly doing what they want, there aren’t enough people who want to show their support for him like this anymore.
They might not be willing to come out and say it just yet, but this is as good an indication as any.
And that’s definitely a reminder that we’re not doomed.

Tue, Jan 6 - Ever since people found out that Avelo Airlines was helping with deportations, there have been protests. Protests at every single airport that they fly out of, most notably in Connecticut.
Well, thanks to these protest, Avelo has exited the deportation business. In a statement a spokesperson said:
The program provided short-term benefits but ultimately did not deliver enough consistent and predictable revenue to overcome its operational complexity and costs.
Oh yeah, I’m totally convinced that’s the reason, nothing to do with the bad publicity or anything…
In an interview with New Haven Independent, Pastor Jack Perkins Davidson of Hamden’s Spring Glen Church put it much more plainly:
The big lesson here is that human suffering is not profitable. I hope Avelo and all corporations in the U.S. have learned that valuable lesson, that collaborating with injustice and collaborating with racism, though it may for them provide the allure of short-term gain, are empty promises. There is no benefit.
Whenever we have proof that protesting works, that’s a reminder that we’re not doomed.
And as long as we keep fighting, we never will be.
So keep fighting, don’t let up. Every single day we have reminders that we are taking back the messaging and showing that if you do the wrong thing, you will lose. And I don’t know what could be more important to remember than that.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!

I found this interesting. We come to Maui almost every year. Since Trump’s last term there is an old building on the hwy that has always had pro Trump stuff painted on it. This year it has been replaced with “justice for Wyatt” a young kid who was killed in a park in Kula Hawaii last August. That made me a bit hopeful his support is fading.
Thanks! I follow more than a few Dems and sometimes the posts seem so repetitive sometimes. This was a good reminder that I'm not necessarily the intended audience.
