VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO!
No, I'm probably not saying what you think I'm saying
VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO!
And I’m sure there are people who somehow followed me without knowing that’s my mantra and are very quickly heading to the follow button so they can unfollow me.
But wait.
I don’t think most people who hate the term actually understand what it means.
It’s not about the primary. It’s never been about the primary, well, it is in a state with a jungle primary, like California or Washington, but for everyone else, it’s not about the primary.
In the primary you’re choosing between Democrats. How would that be “vote blue no matter who?” You are voting blue, that’s literally the entire point of the primary, to vote blue.
“Vote blue no matter who” is about the general, and ONLY generals where a Democrat and a Republican are the only viable options. It means, no matter how bad the Democrat is, they are better than the Republican.
Fetterman is a REALLY good example of this concept.
No one is saying Fetterman was the right choice in the primaries. This isn’t about Conor Lamb or Malcolm Kenyatta. This is about Dr. Oz and ONLY Dr. Oz.
This is about after the primary, when it was John Fetterman vs Dr. Oz, Fetterman was the better choice. And if there had been a third party candidate, Fetterman STILL would have been the better choice, because he could win and all that voting for that third party candidate would do was give us Dr. Oz.
That’s it. That’s all vote blue no matter who means.
However there are exceptions.
First off, if there is an independent candidate that has a better shot, like if it was a Democrat, a Republican and Dan Osborn for Senate, then no, it’s not “vote blue no matter who” it’s vote for Dan Osborn.
There are also going to be situations, especially in super blue areas, where there’s a Dem, and an independent, and the Dem is actually a Republican who knows they can’t get elected any other way, I have one of those for city council. In that case, you vote for the Independent.
And obviously there are situations where two Dems both make it to the general election, that is especially possible in non partisan elections and then you’re voting blue no matter what just because that’s your only option, so this really doesn’t apply.
And in states with the jungle primary system, unfortunately, it is about the primary.
We have to coalesces around one or two Dems in the primary because if we split our vote too many times, no matter how blue the state or area, a Dem won’t get to the general election. Because in the jungle primary all candidates run together, Dems, Republicans and Independents alike. This is why the California Governors race is making me very nervous. (And if you’re confused, long yap incoming this week, all about this mess.)
But aside from those exceptions, all it means is no matter how bad the Dem is, the Republican is always worse.
And even if the Republican is actually more moderate, the implications of the Republican getting elected are ALWAYS WORSE, because of the rules of a majority. We NEED Dems to have a majority in every possible body across the country we can have a majority in.
That means subpoena power. That means leading hearings. That means leading committees. That means more members on each committee. That means deciding what can come to the floor at all. We NEED those everywhere we can get them. Every single state, every single legislature, across the entire country.
And that’s not even touching on executive branches.
So if that means voting for a DINO like Fetterman, (even though, again, Dr. Oz would have been MUCH worse) but we have control of committees? You vote for the shitty Dem, and you do it every single time.
THAT is the meaning of “Vote Blue No Matter Who.” And I will NEVER be ashamed of holding that as one of the most important things we need to do right now.

I’m in WA state - we almost ended up with a R for our public lands commissioner. The top Dem made it to the general by like 50 votes or something. If you are thinking that open primaries make it easier for independents to get through, I have yet to see it.
