Three Wins Today, July 25, 2025
I can’t believe it’s almost August. When did that happen? On the plus side, that means time feels like it’s moving quickly, which means we will be in power before we know it. We have a lot of work to do to get there, but hopefully, these wins help give you the motivation to do it!
Wed, July 23 - FEMA finally sent disaster funding to northern Michigan following their March ice storms. And, almost three months after Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s formal request back in May. It might not feel like a win, but it’s another example of DT eventually caving, thanks to pressure. They may have the power, but we are the majority, and as long as we use our voices, that always matters.
Wed July 23 - Long Beach, California City Council has passed the first reading to increase the wages of airport and event concession workers to almost $30 by the 2028 Olympics (which are still happening in LA as of now.)
City Councilwoman Suely Saro, who has been fighting for this, said in a social media post:
I was proud to lead the effort on city council to raise wages for hospitality workers last year, as well as this year’s wage increase for airport and convention center concession workers. They are the backbone of our city’s hospitality and tourism sectors. By ensuring they earn a fair, living wage helps us build a strong, reliable workforce and a thriving local economy in Long Beach.
There’s still a ways to go before this is passed, but this is a great first step!
Wed, July 23 - The World Court has ruled in favor of required sustainable climate practices across the whole planet, and that we all have the right to a safe planet. In their own words:
The Court is of the view that a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a precondition for the enjoyment of many human rights, such as the right to life, the right to health and the right to an adequate standard of living, including access to water, food and housing. The right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment results from the interdependence between human rights and the protection of the environment.
They go on to require states to follow these guidelines.
Consequently, in so far as States parties to human rights treaties are required to guarantee the effective enjoyment of such rights, it is difficult to see how these obligations can be fulfilled without at the same time ensuring the protection of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres released a video in support of this historic ruling, specifically highlighting the work of young pacific islanders in making this possible.
This is a massive win for the entire planet. Look, you can take a doomerist POV, say something about DT not caring in the slightest, but most other countries do. The US alone can only do so much damage when the rest of the world is working to mitigate it.
If you want to understand more about why this matters even if the US tries to make it worse, Simon Clark made a video on this exact subject back in Feb, that helped take away some of my growing doomerism on this subject at the time.
So I hope this inspires you to keep fighting!
Our voices are our superpower, but only when use them!
