Third Spaces are Vital!
Three Wins Today, Aug 7, 2025
Today has been frustrating. It seems like technology is out to get me. I got a clip on mic, finally, one that has a great rec from a good friend, but the instructions could not be more simple, and yet, I can’t make it work. A few friends think that maybe it needs to be fully charged before you can use it the first time, but I don’t have very high hopes.
Hopefully, if you’ve been having a day that makes everything feel a bit more like the end of the world than usual these wins will help!
If you want to watch the video instead, you can find it at the bottom of this post!
Thurs, July 31 - CC Slaughters, one of the last queer clubs in Portland, OR, will not be closing, at least, not yet. The owner has decided to retire, and was planning on closing the doors on Aug 3, but, someone offered to buy the club, so, while the sale is going through the club stays open. At the top of the website you see the announcement:
We appreciate all the support we’ve received over the past 2 months, since announcing the closure, and understand this has been an emotional time for our staff, friends, and the Portland community. We are excited to announce that CC Slaughters Portland will remain open during the process of changing ownership, and will continue regular business hours until further notice. We look forward to continuing to serve the Portland community as we have now for over 44 years.
Third spaces are so important for every community, but especially the queer community. This isn’t a government win, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a win worth celebrating!
Wed, July 30 - The Ontario, Canada Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce confirmed, during a press conference, that the province has canceled their contract with Starlink and has already begun looking for an alternative so that the most people possible can access the internet.
The more places that break ties with Elon, the better.
Tues, Aug 5 - Donations are making a difference! NPR Florida affiliate, WUSF has announced that, they and their sister classical station have received donations from 1,300 subscribers, with $245k of that going directly to the classical station since the rescission package, which clawed back all NPR and PBS funding passed. This is the most donations they have had in this period of time in the station’s 62 year history.
So I hope this helped remind you, that no matter how bad your day is, there are always wins!
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
