Three Wins Today, April 9, 2025
Today I thought I’d do three wins in three state legislatures. It’s important to remember how much our state and local elections matter, and where we have the most power to create change.
Nebraska and Maine currently are the only states that split the electorial college vote by congressional district. Distirct 2 is called the “blue dot” because it typically goes for the Dem presidential candidate. As a result, Republicans have been working overtime to get rid of it. And their second vote in two years just failed, again.
There was a four-hour filibuster opposing the bill, and the Republicans just couldn’t overcome that.
Remember this when anyone says “talk is cheap”In North Carolina Republicans finally brought their white supremacy bill, HB171 to the floor yesterday, a month after they started yammering on about it. Except, they hit a snag. Opponents of the bill showed up in the gallery, something you won’t see covered anywhere on NC news, however, it had an impact anyway. The bill was first removed from the calender yesterday, and then again today. Remember, there is power in just showing up.
In Colorado, HB1312, the Kelly Loving Act, passed the House. This bill would increase legal protections for trans people in Colorado. That includes considering if a parent respects their trans child’s identity when it comes to custody battles. This is a massive win for so many reasons. I mean, we desperately need queer wins like this right now. But also, as you would expect, there was a hell of a lot of backlash, and it faced an uphill battle to get to this point, and it crossed the first threshold anyway. It still has some steps before it becomes law, but this is a HUGE win. One of the bill’s sponsors, Rep Lorena Garcia said:
This bill is about ensuring that what we say exists with anti-discrimination is a reality for those who truly live life every day in fear of being discriminating against, retaliated against, harmed, harassed. This bill is about making sure that what is assumed, whether it’s in rule or because we hear the word ‘anti-discrimination’ … is protected.
Congrats Colorado!
So those are just three of today’s wins. I hope it reminds you of our power, from using our voices to voting.
Our voices and our vote are our superpower, but ONLY when we use them!
