Election Day is Every Tuesday 8/3-8/9
I’m late, as usual. I’m really sorry about that. I promise, I am working on my schedule so I can get these out more than just the day before the election.
One way that becomes more likely is if I can get more volunteers, so, if you have some time to spare on a weekly basis, and you like sleuthing the internet to find out if someone’s likely a Dem or Republican for fun, this is for you! Send me a DM or email at ariella.elm@gmail.com and I’ll get you started!
We have A LOT of elections this week!

ALABAMA
ARIZONA
Pima County
Tucson
City Council
Ward 3 2 Dems:
Sadie Shaw (Priorities: creating low barrier shelters, using city property to create designated safe camping areas for individuals without housing, renter protections, housing/utility assistance for the elderly, will vote no on Project Blue if elected, climate preservation in the form of water conservation projects/shade infrastructure/cooling centers to reduce cost to Arizonians, invest in mental health programs and community based response teams, fix roads and improve public transport system, supports small businesses and fair wages, improve government transparency by extending office hours/encouraging citizen inclusion in meetings/and ending the 90 day data deletion policy that is currently in effect),
Kevin Dahl (incumbent, focus on conservation and safe neighborhoods, current/former experience on the boards for multiple environmental justice/conservation nonprofits, former professor and author on local horticulture and conservation efforts)
Ward 5 3 Dems:
Selina Barajas (first woman to run for this seat, priority areas: urban planning, environmentalism, economic justice, housing as a human right, youth engagement),
Christopher Elsner (wants to run center of the aisle/appeal to Dems and Reps, no on Project Blue, making public meetings more accessible, improving roads and public transportation, reform zoning and coding laws to make housing denser/more walkable/more affordable, reinstate public transit fees for people with sufficient income, supports ranked choice voting),
Jesse Lugo is the 3rd "DEM" in this race...pretty clear he is actually a republican, I don't see any Dem policies on his red themed page at all, he wants to fund the police departments, cut mental health and community services, shield certain criminal offenders from the "stigma" of certain convictions going on their record, and use the police to harass people who are homeless.
Ward 6 4 Dems:
Miranda Schubert (Priorities: protect fare-free and accessible public transportation, improve streets including bike and pedestrian paths, tenant rights, aging in place with dignity, zoning reform to keep affordable housing in the city limits, convert unoccupied buildings into housing, housing first, increase public access to government decision making process, support community orgs, solicit feedback from the community, renewable energy, cooling centers/shade creation, commercial compliance with rain saving efforts, violence prevention and community support services, expand mental health/community well-being/youth engagement programs, increase civilian oversight of the police department, promote data driven approaches to decreasing traffic fatalities, work to end generational poverty),
James Sinex (Priorities: solar energy, support Prop 414 with reservations, ranked choice voting),
Theresa Riel (dropped out)
Leighton Rockafellow Jr. is the 4th Dem in this race...while he parrots a lot of Dem ideas he also wants to increase funding to the police, encourage them to harass people in the street, increase arrest and prosecutions of people who are homeless.
Recall election: (2 regular council seats open):
Eduardo Baca vs. Cesar Aguirre (incumbent);
Christopher Dodson vs. Brian Flagg (incumbent);
Mayor:
Anita Romero vs. Roxana Valenzuela (incumbent)
Note: Incumbents have all been targeted for removal by the former mayor who accuses them of prioritizing housing access, food security for low-income families, and fire department services, over corporate gain. All challengers to the incumbents are write-in only as they failed to complete their paperwork in a timely and appropriate manner.
