Daily Dems Doing the Work, Making Noise and Fighting Back Day 168
It can't get more plain than this.
This post is focused on one simple questions: “Why don’t Democrats explain things clearly?” It’s a question I see time and time again, and the argument basically boils down to “Dems are making noise, but it’s not the right kind of noise.” I didn’t even plan this, these are just the first posts I saw that were good that weren’t getting the attention I felt they should. (this is how I chose the Dems for this series, now you know)
Repping the Rep: Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12)
Interviewed Community Food Bank of New Jersey CEO, Elizabeth McCarthy. And it was an honest conversation about what they’re dealing with. Things started getting bad when USDA stopped supporting them, but with the shutdown it’s even worse.
Did you know the shut down is going to stop SNAP benefits till the government reopens? So on top of their normal clients, they’ll now have to have enough for people who use SNAP, and then there are are the federal furloughed workers, many of whom can’t afford food right now.
This is why elections matter. This is why it’s vital to vote in every single election, no matter how small. They’re probably gonna be okay because of the support of New Jersey. For states with red governments, they don’t have that. And if Mikie Sherill doesn’t win, NJ won’t either.
And this is why mutual aid matters. If you are able bodied enough and you want to do something that has an impact right now, volunteer at your local food bank. You can make a HUGE difference for so many.
Here’s the full conversation:
Rep Dave Min (CA-47)
Posted a video clearly explaining the healthcare price increase. It doesn’t beat around the bush or try to explain procedure, it’s just directly about how it will affect you:
These Medicaid cuts don’t take affect till 2027, they are already impacting care. Expect to see a major price increase even if you are insured with private health insurance as insurance providers start to budget out the impacts of the Medicaid cuts, nearly a trillion dollars.
We heard that Covered California notices are already going out right now to those who are insured on the ACA exchanges. 50 to 200 percent increases in monthly health insurance premiums.
We’re talking about going up hundreds or thousands of dollars a month, something that I know most families, including myself, my family could not afford.
I appreciate how he says it will affect his own family, talking specifically about Covered California, which I’m sure many people who are on it have no idea that’s what was meant by ACA marketplace. And I think it’s great that he makes it clear that these cuts don’t take affect till 2027, but they are going to affect you today.
Republicans tried very hard to have none of these affects take place until after the midterms. They really failed with that one. So it’s our job to capitalize on it as much as possible. Republicans and Republicans alone are responsible for this.

Stephen Lynch (MA-08)
Has been going to town meetings across his district to talk about healthcare and the Republican Shutdown. I thought it was just this one, but today he posted another.
I really like this idea. There are a lot of people, especially in smaller towns and cities in New England, who are more attune to local politics. These people would attend a town meeting but probably not a town hall by their member of congress, so he’s showing up where they are. Obviously this isn’t the right tactic in every district, I’m sure there are many districts where this feels completely foreign, but there, it works.
And it’s important for our Dems to be everywhere the people are. That’s the only way they’re gonna hear the truth.

Sen Martin Heinrich (NM)
Shared some good news out of the Supreme Court about public lands. He uses a whiteboard and it almost feels like a Khan Academy video. Basically, they ruled that if you don’t touch private land, we must all have access to all public land no matter how close to private land it is. It’s a huge case and you’ve probably never heard of it, so I’m so glad he’s bringing attention to it.
And doing so in such an engaging and simple way.
I would love this style of explanation for everything, please!

So those are some of today’s fighters, specifically fighters that I think are explaining things well. What do you think? Did they do a good job? Who do you think is a good explainer?
If you made it to the end of this post, comment 🍽️ (place setting) because everyone should be able to put food on the table.
And if you watched or read any of these stories, comment 🪜 (ladder) because…well, you know if you watched Martin Heinrich’s video.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
