Daily Dems Doing the Work, Making Noise and Fighting Back Day 218
Solidarity Forever, Union Strong
Unpopular opinion: I love performative. I don’t care why someone is doing something, if it’s making noise in support of our goals, who cares? The more noise the better.
Not all of the below stories are performative, but you might think some are. And that’s okay.
Repping the Rep: Don Norcross (NJ-01)
Has been in office since 2014, he is a union man and he served as president of the Southern New Jersey AFL-CIO Central Labor Council for 16 years, so there is no better man to be one of the Co-chairs of the Labor Caucus.
The caucus put out a video for Labor Day with Rep Norcross and his other co-chairs, Reps Debbie Dingel (MI-06), Steven Horsford (NV-04) and Mark Pocan (WI-02)
In the video they talk about their history in the labor movement as well as the history and accomplishments of the caucus as well as the moment itself. Very informative video, especially if you are new to labor.
Rep Jimmy Gomez (CA-34)
Is hosting a National Housing Summit at the Library of Congress on Wednesday. You probably didn’t hear about it unless you follow Rep Gomez, and even then, you probably didn’t pay attention, it didn’t jump out at me either.
But this very much seems like something worth knowing about, and I’m thrilled that I know before it happens. You can RSVP here. It’s pretty self explanatory, it’s a one day summit on the housing affordability crisis with eight House Dem speakers: Hakeem Jeffries (NY-07), Jake Auchincloss (MA-04), Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Lou Correa (CA-46), Brittany Pettersen (CO-07), Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Brad Schneider (IL-10) and Ritchie Torres (NY-15) along with 18 speakers in the affordable housing field.

Reps Troy A. Carter (LA-02), and Jim Clyburn (SC-06)
Are joining Michigan Dems in a People’s Town Hall in Lisa McClain’s 9th district, because, she wont’ show up. If you live in the Lake Orion area and you’re free Friday evening, RSVP and hear from two Dems who actually DO care whether you live or die.

Rep Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37)
Stopped by South LA Cafe for a meeting with a few creators (including me) and to talk to Joe, the owner about the importance of supporting Black owned-businesses.
My favorite part is when she talks about giving Black owned-businesses the space to fail. A huge part of a successful business is the mistakes made along the way and Black owned-businesses are expected to succeed immediately and that’s wrong.

Rep Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03)
Visited Eloy Detention Center again, and went on Alex Witt to discuss her experience. She said “This is nothing short of a prison, with the complete lack of even basic needs for detainees.” 97 women asked to speak to her and her team, she was only able to speak to a fraction of them, but those she did speak to had horror stories.
For instance, they are given used underwear, so of course they’re getting UTIs. So they go to the medical center on site, where they are given water, that isn’t clean, which just makes them sicker.
Rep Ansari said she is going to do everything in her power to fix as many of these problems as she can, like getting specialists to those with cancer.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07)
Spoke at the first ever Boston Labor Day March. It’s the first ever because it’s never been needed before, but the world is different now.
Every year on this day, we come together to break bread, we couldn’t do that this year. We couldn’t do that this year when the opposition and the fascist and chief is attacking working families, breaking laws, breaking spirits along the way, we could not proceed with business as usual. And these two extraordinary women, Darlene Lambos (President and principal officer of the Greater Boston Labor Council), Chrissy Lynch (President of MA AFL-CIO), they knew that. They knew that this moment requires something disruptive, something that matches the energy of the opposition. We needed to meet the moment with a solidarity march, emphasis on solidarity because nobody is free till everybody is free

So those are just some of today’s fighters. And a whole lot of calls to action to boot!
If you made it to the end of this post comment with 👷(worker) because it’s Labor Day and they deserve our praise and support.
And if you watched or read any of these stories comment 🚰 (drinking water) because that should be non negotiable.
