Daily Dems Doing the Work, Making Noise and Fighting Back Day 284
The message of the day is: Republicans are choosing to keep the government shut down
Whenever anyone says “people are starving, this shutdown has to end!” The answer is simple. Republicans could open up the government this second, if they would just include halting the ACA premium tax credit expiration. That’s all it would take, and that’s what our Dems are driving home every single day.
Repping the Rep: Henry Cuellar (TX-28)
met with Texas members of Farm Credit, an organizations that helps farmers with finances. As someone who does not have any rural experience to speak of, I had never even considered that this would be a thing that exists.
Rep Cuellar said they discussed:
the role [Farm Credit] play in supporting rural America, the importance of access to markets, and the need to bring input costs down to help our farmers and ranchers.
This is another reminder of the difference of districts and why we can’t just run the same kind of candidate everywhere. I promise you, most electeds in the NYC area are not thinking about how to get farmers harvest in markets, but someone like Rep Cuellar has to. And it seems to be something he excels at.
So that’s the end of Henry Cuellar’s week of Repping the Rep. I hope you learned something, and maybe understand a bit better how he keeps getting elected.

Rep Jennifer McClellan (VA-04)
Was on Meet the Press with Kristen Welker, who tried to trap her in a corner by saying didn’t Tuesday prove everything and now Dems should just cave and sign the CR?
Rep McClellan wasn’t having it:
I think anybody with that message isn’t listening to the voters. What the voters said yesterday is, we repudiate the policies of Donald Trump and the congressional Republicans. We are worried about the economy, which Donald Trump got elected saying he was going to lower costs. He’s done everything but. He’s raised costs. We heard voters say we’re worried about health care. We’re worried about when we see open enrollment and our premiums spike. We’re worried about these Medicaid cuts. We’re worried about our hospitals closing. We’re worried about federal workers who have been fired. That was the message of last night’s election, is they want leaders who are focused on their problems putting people over politics.
This is the kind of messaging our Dems are driving home again and again.
And she’s absolutely right, Tuesday proved we are on the right path, why go back to the wrong one?

(VT)
tried for unanimous consent on his bill to reopen the government, which, of course included continuing ACA premium tax credits, and of course was instantly shot down.
But while walking to the Senate Chamber, he talked about a Republican constituent who’s costs are skyrocketing:
It’s really shocking You know, I got a note from a Northeast Kingdom farmer who voted for Trump. His premiums are going to go up $2,500 a month. So this is not about Republican Democrat, it’s not about Anything other than the need and the right that every family small businesses have to be able to keep health care And that’s the bare minimum So my goal is to get some Republicans to pay attention that we’ve got to extend these credits So people can keep their health care.
I think in our messaging, it’s really important to bring up points like this. This isn’t partisan. Republicans are affected just as much, if not more than Dems. Republicans are doing this to their own voters. It’s facts like this that are why we won so much on Tuesday.
And we need our Dems to keep doing this, keep introducing bills and asking for unanimous consent, so that it never becomes normalized that Republicans are willingly starving and harming their own constituents.

(TX-35)
has been posting phonecalls with constituents who will be be priced out of healthcare for months now. This is just the latest example of one of those calls:
If my insurance premiums doubled next year, I honestly don’t know if I’d be able to afford to maintain my coverage. You know, it would be choosing between groceries and insurance, and I mean, without these tax credits, my monthly insurance premiums would be over $500 a month, you know, more than my car payment, but it’s just not sustainable. And these tax credits that we have right now are really the only thing that we have that is helping keep insurance, you know, affordable and more accessible.
Her car payment will be cheaper than her health insurance. That shouldn’t be the case in any situation.
The things that keep you alive are seeing a doctor, especially with asthma, and eating, and having to chose only one is beyond cruel. I think this story really exhibits the cruelty of what’s happening.

So those are some of today’s fighters. Now let’s help them out by spreading these messages. That’s the best way we keep winning and have more days like Tuesday.
If you made it the end of this post, comment 👩🌾 (farmer) cause I think we could all stand to learn more about the rural communities and their needs.
And if you watched or read any of these stories, comment 🚗 (car) becuase, well, as I said above, car payments should not be less than health insurance.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
