A Media Blackout is NEVER the Answer
I don't think I've ever made a post this angry before
Has everyone lost their ever loving fucking mind?
I’m not kidding.
Why the FUCK am I reading post after post saying we need a social media blackout tomorrow????
I don’t know who started it, but I certainly know why.
Think about this.
If we actually succeed, if we prove that a general strike has legs, WHO IS GOING TO COVER IT IF WE DO A SOCIAL MEDIA BLACKOUT????
And I know I’m going to get comments saying “I didn’t see that,” or “you’re misunderstanding,” no, I’m fucking not, just because you didn’t see it doesn’t mean I didn’t.
Let me be crystal clear, between now and the day social media dies, there should not be one single fucking day that we stop posting, stop telling the stories that need to be told, stop educating and learning and spreading the power of the people and those fighting back.
If you don’t have anything useful or constructive to say tomorrow, then repost, spend the whole day reposting and quoting and commenting, but there is NEVER an excuse to cede social media.
For the record this goes for TikTok too. I have over 300k followers and have been getting less than 1k views for almost a year now, but I’m still there, because the 10 people that watch my videos NEED to see them.
The right would like NOTHING more than to have us hand them another platform, to give them a day where they are the only people spreading information.
WE CAN’T GIVE THEM THAT!
There is no point at which social media can count in a general strike or economic blackout or anything else.
EVER!
And anyone saying otherwise IS TRYING TO STOP OUR VOICES FROM BEING HEARD.
Just cause someone says something and it sounds good and progressive DOES NOT MAKE IT TRUE.
Use your head, PLEASE! We are 100% doomed if we give them free reign for a day.
I can’t believe I have to say this, but I’ve seen too many posts today, and the worst part is I saw so many, I ALMOST FELL FOR IT TOO.
Trust your gut. If you are someone who actually cares about the world, your gut is usually right.
If this felt weird, that’s because it is.
I HOPE somehow, magically, this general strike call got out father than social media, I hope it’s training for how to do this with the necessary mutual aid in the near future, but it can’t do shit if we aren’t posting about it.
DON’T CEDE ATTENTION TO THE RIGHT BY PLAYING INTO THIS!
Tomorrow we need to be on social media MORE, not less.
Remember my mantra, our voices are our superpower, BUT ONLY WHEN WE USE THEM!
I agree with Mike. It’s probably an oppositional tactic. They go for the gullible. Thanks for speaking up. FTR I had to take a break from Insta/Threads because it was affecting my health. I’m using Substack for a more in-depth, calm approach to deal with ~gestures wildly ~ this.
A black out on social media was probably Steven Miller's idea. An economic boycott is a good idea, but not silencing resistance voices.
